Lemmy the Fediverse alternative to Reddit is having his moment of glory, but it takes the help of the whole Fediverse to make this magical moment become the beginning of a new era!
#Reddit’s API policies for third-party apps are causing a small exodus of users to what is now its most functional alternative: #Lemmy.
In the last 48 hours, the Italian instance feddit.it has had the registrations they usually have in two months, but it seems that this is a generalized phenomenon!
Now we need to make those users stay. How can we do it?
Here we need help from all over the Fediverse and above all we need the #mastohelp of the largest community in the #Fediverse!
In fact, Reddit users feel comfortable there, not only due to its ergonomics, but also due to the liveliness of the subreddits and the number of threads; the problem is that Lemmy users are a fraction of those of Reddit: how will they be able to guarantee a vitality comparable to that of Reddit?
But this is exactly where the Fedeverse comes into play! In fact, even without subscribing to Lemmy, Mastodon, Friendica, Pleroma, Misskey and even Pixelfed users can comment and open threads on the Lemmy communities.
Here is a simple explanation of how to write a post about a Lemmy community:
Introductory text of the message (less than 200 characters and possibly without hashtags or mentions) which will become the title of the thread as you will see it on Lemmy
Community mention
Additional text (with any hashtags and other mentions) that will become the text of the post as seen on Lemmy
Any additional mentions for Friendica groups/forums
Link to the article (let's remember that Lemmy is basically an alternative to Reddit, which is basically a news aggregator)

Many of the current Fediverse users landed on Mastodon when Musk switched Twitter, and stayed mostly because they found the environment enjoyable and inspiring; now it would be perfect if they could help the “refugees” of Reddit by creating an inspiring environment on Lemmy!

@piratepost @lealternative @fediverse @fediversenews Elsewhere I hear that Lemmy’s primary instance has a fairly serious moderation problem which the mods – the developers – refuse to address. So there’s that.
@fishidwardrobe @piratepost @lealternative @fediverse @fediversenews
Honestly not sure the situation is nearly as clean cut as a blanket statement like this makes it out … and honestly, for an ecosystem that’s still trying to get off of the ground and work itself out … the virality of “bad news” really ought to be avoided.
I could be mistaken, but the deal is that the devs have a political position, understand that not everyone shares it, and encourage new communities/instances and forks.
@maegul @piratepost @lealternative @fediverse @fediversenews If the “political position” is “we won’t moderate abuse because free speech”, then you know where you can stick that.
@fishidwardrobe
There is no “primary instance” for lemmy.
There is the oldest snd biggest from the devs… but as long as i use lemmy (2 years almostl they always recommend to setup your own, go to smaller instances, if you don’t want an own…
And the communities if joined from there on my own lemmy are well moderated.
And if you really understood the fediverse, you will know that using kbin will not prevent you from spam from a not well moderated lemmy-instance…
So your message tells me “i’ve not understand the principle of federation”. Not less, not more.
@lealternative @piratepost
@jakob @lealternative @piratepost @fishidwardrobe
Actually
…
A well moderated instance can deny to communicate with a not well moderated instance.
I don’t know the moderation functionality of Lemmy or kbin and therefore don’t know, if the software itself allows it. But there always is a way, if you really want this.
So, being on a well moderated instance can protect you from spam from a not well moderated instance.
@jakob @lealternative @piratepost “If I really understood the fediverse…” condescending AND gatekeeping in one package. Thank you so much. Two words, and the second one is “off”.
@fishidwardrobe
if you think so… ok.
But you did not understand federation… kbin federates also with lemmy. It makes no difference if you use kbin or lemmy or friendica or mastodon or whatever fediverse-service which has federation on…
if there is an instance which is not well moderated, and your instance does not block this other one, you receive spam from this instance… independent what you use yourself.
kbin does not protect you from spam from lemmy because it’s kbin and not lemmy… if you think so, you did not understand federation.
and now: feel free and block me. or try to understand, what federation is.
@lealternative @piratepost
@jakob @lealternative @piratepost @fishidwardrobe
“if there is an instance which is not well moderated, and your instance does not block this other one, you receive spam from this instance… independent what you use yourself.”
If I may, as a simple user, really not a techie, when I receive spam or hate speech from an instance that my instance moderators do not block, I block the user or the instance.
@CogitoErgoBloom be careful, because the spam problem on Lemmy is a bit different from the spam problem on Mastodon (and other microblogging systems).
It is sufficient that the Lemmy user IS NOT SUBSCRIBED to a community to not see the contents of that community.
The Mastodon user, on the other hand, sees the contents of all second-level contacts and everything that is re-shared by first-level contacts.
For this reason, unless an instance is chock full of trolls and shitposters, I don’t recommend blocking or muting an entire instance.
@jakob @fishidwardrobe @lealternative
@piratepost
I am careful about that. I always check the account and the instance before muting or blocking. If moderators do their job, that’s ok.
But let’s be clear: if an instance tolerates hate accounts and ask me to negotiate or compromise, I block. Bothsideism is not neutral, it is creating a systemic violent community and collaborating with far-right, and nobody has to force me to being submitted to people who want to exterminate me.
@lealternative @jakob @fishidwardrobe
@CogitoErgoBloom @lealternative @jakob @fishidwardrobe You are right. Blocking an instance is a last resort, but sometimes there’s nothing else you can do. After all, if a user remains inside a problematic instance, it means that it too is problematic.
@jakob @lealternative @piratepost @fishidwardrobe
I tried to install lemmy on an ubuntu 20.4 virtual machine without success. The command “cargo install lemmy_server --target-dir /usr/bin/ --locked --features embed-pictrs” gives a compile error. Instead the command “cargo install lemmy_server --target-dir /usr/bin/ --locked” is fine. I use apache2 and not nginx, so I need to figure out how to configure it. At the moment I can’t log in.

@pierobosio
sorry, i can’t help. I run my lemmy via docker-container/docker-compose.yml and nginx
@fishidwardrobe @lealternative @piratepost
@jakob @lealternative @piratepost @fishidwardrobe
Docker and nginx are good. Well, I like Lemmy and hope the developers fix compatibility issues with other platforms soon.
@pierobosio in che senso “problemi di compatibilità”?
@jakob @fishidwardrobe @lealternative
@piratepost @lealternative @jakob @fishidwardrobe

@fishidwardrobe
> Lemmy’s primary instance has a fairly serious moderation problem
Taking this at face value (what is or isn’t a “moderation problem” depends a lot on your value);
a) there’s no such thing as a “primary instance” in the fediverse.
b) as with any fediverse app, moderation can happen at the instance level, and the user level.
c) I’ve not used Lemmy much, but I presume that moderation can also happen per subLemmy.
@piratepost @lealternative @fediverse @fediversenews
@strypey @piratepost @lealternative @fediverse @fediversenews sure, but if the actual developers refuse to deal with a moderation problem, then that’s a red flag.
@fishidwardrobe @strypey @lealternative
“elsewhere I read”, “someone said”
therefore
Lemmy is bad
Ok, I read this kind of passive aggressive type of messages every day now. more often than not, they are accompanied by the advice to use another alternative software to Lemmy (very interesting software, albeit in Beta rel.).
I’d say this little smear campaign against Lemmy developers isn’t working… 😁 😄 🤣
I would say that it would be appropriate to stop trying again.
@piratepost @strypey @lealternative I didn’t say Lemmy was bad. I said “So, there’s that”. As in, “factor that into your equations”.
The account I saw wasn’t pushing any alternative software. I won’t link to it here in case of pile-on. I’ve already muted two people on this thread.
But, in one sense, yes: this is a second hand account of Lemmy I have not verified. You should also factor THAT into your equations.
@fishidwardrobe @strypey @lealternative it’s always the same message. A ridiculous thing! Also I remind you that, apart from the fact that your message is not at all relevant to this thread (this thread is an invitation to support Lemmy and not to present absurd accusations against its developers), it was you who came to write below my message… 😁 😄 🤣
So now I would also get bored… I’m starting to apply the golden rule:
DFTT
@fishidwardrobe@mastodon.me.uk @piratepost@poliverso.org @strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz @lealternative@mastodon.uno
THis is the problem with the sort of “smear” or “negativity” habbits on here (and no doubt other/all social media).
That it’s almost all hearsay is never stated nor understood. And the fact of the matter is that we all love to get negative about things, so it spreads like fire.
On twitter when taking down the corrupt and powerful, that’s probably a good and useful weapon. On the fediverse about other instances and platforms?!?! Probably just a plain destructive behaviour to be frank with you.
If we’re all too eager to make sure we’re “in the good place” by shooting down anything that could possibly “from the bad place”, the problem is we may just end up with not much of a place in the end.
@maegul @lealternative @strypey @piratepost Well, the other problem on here is that we all like to gang up to deny that there could ever be a problem on here…
@fishidwardrobe
> the other problem on here is that we all like to gang up to deny that there could ever be a problem on here
I’m all for making specific criticisms, with links to sources or primary evidence. Just spreading scuttlebutt isn’t the way to expose or address problems, ever. It is, however, a habit that can be exploited by Bad Actors trying to spread FUD for any number of reasons (commercial motives geoplitical motives, personal grudge, etc)
@maegul @lealternative @piratepost
@strypey @lealternative @fishidwardrobe @maegul I think you too have noticed that there are people who have no intention of positively discussing this or that Fediverse software, who have no intention of expressing a technical or ergonomic opinion on the functionality of a software or of expressing ideas for improvement the social environment. These people always post the same message 🤦🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
They are only interested in one issue, always the same, namely the one that makes them enter public threads to repeat their mantra over and over again.
Blessed be the holy man or holy woman who created the “mute” feature. And glory to the holy man or holy woman who created the “block” function 😂
