Lemmy the Fediverse alternative to Reddit is having his moment of glory, but it takes the help of the whole Fediverse to make this magical moment become the beginning of a new era!
#Reddit’s API policies for third-party apps are causing a small exodus of users to what is now its most functional alternative: #Lemmy.
In the last 48 hours, the Italian instance feddit.it has had the registrations they usually have in two months, but it seems that this is a generalized phenomenon!
Now we need to make those users stay. How can we do it?
Here we need help from all over the Fediverse and above all we need the #mastohelp of the largest community in the #Fediverse!
In fact, Reddit users feel comfortable there, not only due to its ergonomics, but also due to the liveliness of the subreddits and the number of threads; the problem is that Lemmy users are a fraction of those of Reddit: how will they be able to guarantee a vitality comparable to that of Reddit?
But this is exactly where the Fedeverse comes into play! In fact, even without subscribing to Lemmy, Mastodon, Friendica, Pleroma, Misskey and even Pixelfed users can comment and open threads on the Lemmy communities.
Here is a simple explanation of how to write a post about a Lemmy community:
Introductory text of the message (less than 200 characters and possibly without hashtags or mentions) which will become the title of the thread as you will see it on Lemmy
Community mention
Additional text (with any hashtags and other mentions) that will become the text of the post as seen on Lemmy
Any additional mentions for Friendica groups/forums
Link to the article (let's remember that Lemmy is basically an alternative to Reddit, which is basically a news aggregator)
Any attached images
Many of the current Fediverse users landed on Mastodon when Musk switched Twitter, and stayed mostly because they found the environment enjoyable and inspiring; now it would be perfect if they could help the “refugees” of Reddit by creating an inspiring environment on Lemmy!

But you did not understand federation… kbin federates also with lemmy. It makes no difference if you use kbin or lemmy or friendica or mastodon or whatever fediverse-service which has federation on…
if there is an instance which is not well moderated, and your instance does not block this other one, you receive spam from this instance… independent what you use yourself.
kbin does not protect you from spam from lemmy because it’s kbin and not lemmy… if you think so, you did not understand federation.
and now: feel free and block me. or try to understand, what federation is.

If I may, as a simple user, really not a techie, when I receive spam or hate speech from an instance that my instance moderators do not block, I block the user or the instance.
@CogitoErgoBloom be careful, because the spam problem on Lemmy is a bit different from the spam problem on Mastodon (and other microblogging systems).
It is sufficient that the Lemmy user IS NOT SUBSCRIBED to a community to not see the contents of that community.
The Mastodon user, on the other hand, sees the contents of all second-level contacts and everything that is re-shared by first-level contacts.
For this reason, unless an instance is chock full of trolls and shitposters, I don’t recommend blocking or muting an entire instance.

I am careful about that. I always check the account and the instance before muting or blocking. If moderators do their job, that’s ok.
But let’s be clear: if an instance tolerates hate accounts and ask me to negotiate or compromise, I block. Bothsideism is not neutral, it is creating a systemic violent community and collaborating with far-right, and nobody has to force me to being submitted to people who want to exterminate me.

@CogitoErgoBloom @lealternative @jakob @fishidwardrobe You are right. Blocking an instance is a last resort, but sometimes there’s nothing else you can do. After all, if a user remains inside a problematic instance, it means that it too is problematic.

I tried to install lemmy on an ubuntu 20.4 virtual machine without success. The command “cargo install lemmy_server --target-dir /usr/bin/ --locked --features embed-pictrs” gives a compile error. Instead the command “cargo install lemmy_server --target-dir /usr/bin/ --locked” is fine. I use apache2 and not nginx, so I need to figure out how to configure it. At the moment I can’t log in.

Docker and nginx are good. Well, I like Lemmy and hope the developers fix compatibility issues with other platforms soon.

Lemmy nasce per essere gestito da nginx e installato da docker. Io invece compilo i sorgenti con Rust e Cargo. Poi uso Apache2 configurato con la configurazione trovata nel link, modificando le porte: 1234 per la interfaccia web lemmy-ui e 8536 per il server Lemmy.
Forse non è la configurazione corretta o Lemmy ha introdotto modifiche al codice al momento non documentate.
