Basically the title. Why are so many gaming content creators bashing other modern games and praising this particular title? Is it because it is a proper offline RPG? Or is it because there’s no “greedy” subscription or play-to-win?

Others already pointed out the quality and pricing, I’d add that it’s a rare title in the traditional RPG genre.

Many modern RPGs are really Action-RPGs, at least those in the Western market.
They let you do some role-playing, but you can usually play only one fleshed-out role (e.g. the Witcher, the Dovahkiin etc.) and they’re much more focused on their combat systems.

We’ve also seen renewed interest in traditional role-playing in the form of table-top RPGs.

So, a big budget, high-quality title dropping after these years of drought just hits a nerve and has people hoping other studios get the message, too.

I think the Dragonborn is a bad example since he/she can be anyone and you can have plenty of fun with the game while ignoring the main quest.

I did think about that before posting and thing is, the Dovahkiin to me, is not the guy who completes the main quest.

The Dovahkiin is the personification of “I’ll do literally anything, if it’s a quest”. Players will go from whacking people in a fighters guild quest, to whacking people in a mages guild quest. From helping out in the murder guild, over to saving the world.

Skyrim doesn’t require you to choose a role beyond that. You can leave out content, e.g. not whack people in mages guild quests, but the game really doesn’t encourage that play style. You’re just playing unoptimally at that point.

I guess, maybe it is rather the case that the Dovahkiin is not a fleshed-out role and the role-playing in Skyrim is just not very prominent.

Got you. Yes, in that respect it’s not good roleplaying. But then I can’t think of many RPGs where you are not the chosen one that has to solve every problem (hello, Cmd. Shepard!)
