So… is Pixelfed really like Instagram? It seems to be really photo focused. As in: Actual photography. While Instagram is much more personal often, with selfies and so on. And from everything I’ve personally seen, it seems that selfies on the fediverse are like a huge no-no. No one is stigmatized for doing it, but no one is doing it. I don’t know if what I’m saying is clear.

it’s just got a photography-centric userbase i guess. how it’s used is down to how people choose to use it :p

it’s a platform for personal posting if you want it to be

Yeah but, a platform is also a culture you know? I don’t want to go there and do whatever, and changing what it is. I want to respect that. It’s like Lemmy, I came here wanting it to be it’s own thing, not just another Reddit and I’m trying to be careful in my usage.

Platforms can handle multiple cultures and the cultures will continually change and evolve. I certainly wouldn’t worry about harming Pixelfed by posting more personal photos. People don’t need to follow you if they don’t want to.

Instagram used to be more photo focused too when it started off, I imagine if it gets more of the average user crowd to switch over then it will revert to a more instagram like feed.

it’s based mostly on old Instagram which was way more photography-focused than it currently is.

It’s also basically used as a image hosting place for artist on other platforms on the fediverse as many servers on the microblogging federated platforms do not allow or severely limit multimedia uploads. (same thing happens with PeerTube and Funkwhale and videos and audio respectively)
