This is silly. The web is not in decline and Google is not at fault. Most of the web is garbage, and Google helps us find the information buried in a sea of ads and repetitively copied/reworded content. We are moving to a world where putting up a plagiarized page with tons of ads will not be profitable. The sooner that day arrives, the better.

I don’t really care if content I create is used to train LLMs, but I do object to Reddit monetizing the content I placed on their platform. Without somehow rewarding me for that content. I’d rather just post it here and let the LLMs train on it and let the value accumulate to the LLMs. I do think there’s a greater good for humanity. And just because I say something intelligent or unintelligent, I see that as a gift to the greater good of society. I did not create that gift as a benefit to Reddit shareholders but having said all this I’m realistic, and the best thing I can do is try to keep the value I add within open platforms like this one.

We all need to move on from this, including myself. We know Reddit’s business practice. If we don’t like it help make the fediverse better. Having said that your posts will be scrapped over here to the benefit of nobody so is that better? At least on Reddit you have the option of owning their stock.

I agree. I also notice a constant push to ban anything that is deemed offensive, which in most cases is just a statement of opinion that someone did not like.

Sounds like a token gesture at best. The value of moderators is way over hyped. The real moderation happens in the upvote and downvotes that posts and comments receive.

I still go there when I want to answer something that I know there are posts there. Also some products run their user communities on Reddit but I have a much more utilitarian attitude towards Reddit. My focus on participation is over here.

I also think you’re going to see Lemmy continue to grow overtime because it does not need to be a Comercial success. It doesn’t need to go through the new owners, whims or financial needs. It’ll just continue to slowly grow until someday it overtakes Reddit. The mere fact that it can’t be taken down is in itself a huge advantage/defense.

I think the ideal provider would give you a package deal with an identity on a Mastodon, Lemmy, Pixelfed, and whatever else comes along servers.

I wish they also had a Lemmy server. I’ve always liked Medium and have subscribed to them in the past. If they offered a lemmy servers as part of the whole package, that would be a big win for me. 

I’ll check it out. All the ones I have looked at so far feel not well thought out yet. I guess that is to be expected at the beginning.

I cant get into mastodon for the same reason I cant get into twitter. Why people think this is great way to interact on any subject is beyond me.

Yeah, I may go with this option, but I really like the idea of helping create an economy. I suspect one of the Achilles heels of the Fediverse will be instances disappearing after users based their identity on a free server that the host eventually lost interest. Time will tell. I may be wrong. But also may be right.

If Reddits pricing was reasonable I would not find this objectionable but the way the Apollo developer spoke about this, the API pricing was meant to kill third party developers.

I prefer paying for a service rather than donating. When you pay for something, there is an expectation of a service in return. I think the fediverse could benefit from creating an economy for this sort of thing.

I suspect all social networks will need to federate eventually. Just like aol had to let the internet in or fade into irrelevance. I hope it’s something more like nostr then the Fediverse but I see this as inevitable.

This can play out in other ways. Search platforms start indexing open platforms and more links start making reference to these platforms.

They were always going to win. It’s their platform. They can do whatever they want. But… They lost my attention and paid subscription. I now only go to Reddit when I’m looking for something I can’t find elsewhere. It used to be my favorite platform.
