Exactly what I was thinking. Place would not be as compelling if it were a regular occurrence or if it were a permanent never-ending contest.

3 Seasons is plenty of time to create a very complete and compelling story. The problem is when they dont allow for the completion of the story but instead cancel the show for $reasons.

I watched and loved the german series DARK and was quite excited for the new show 1899 from the same creators. Unfortunately it was dumped after only 1 season so I never even watched it. I dont want to get invested in something that I know will never be completed.

What made Place special was the rarity. It created a sort of internet time capsule of what was popular or in the collective mind at that point in time. If you wanted to get what was important to you on the board then you had to act with purpose RIGHT NOW because it would be over and gone in a couple of days. Even with all the effort put in it would be erased at the end. Just Dust in the Wind.

I feel bad for them. They clearly care far more about the communities they have created than Reddit can even pretend to.

Synology DSM is only available on Synology hardware. It is not something you can buy from them and install on your own NAS.

However…

There is Xpenology that works fairly well. I ran one for a couple of years and loved it, but updating it difficult and potentially dangerous to your data, some apps will not work and the latest DSM7 does not look like it will ever be available. I finally gave up last year and bought an Asustor AS3304T. Their ASM software and apps are not on par with Synology but it gets the job done for me at a significantly cheaper price.

They are currently my local NPR station and have great music programs and DJs that align with my tastes. I will miss them dearly when I move next month but their music streams are available for free on other platforms too.

How does it survive where ZLib cant? I love that there is a live alternative, but surely it will suffer the same fate eventually.

I pulled an antique Apple2][ clone (Franklin 2100) out of storage the other day along with some old floppy disks. I was shocked when it fired right up and could still read my homework project from 1990. So while it is possible to recover old data off of ancient media, it is highly impractical to keep the required hardware in working order forever.

I frequently try new distros and always go back to Mint/Debian.

G2 still does! I dont think I have a charging cable for the G1 anymore so I cant test it.

I still have my G1 and my G2! The G2 was one of my favorite phones of all time and, sadly, the last I ever owned with a physical keyboard.
