I made a second account on lemm.ee - it’s big so has all the connections you could need and has amazing uptime.

That’s just on lemmy.world website. But if I toggle that, it also changes what I see on Sync.

Sync also has a ‘hide read’ button although it unhides on page refresh - but it’s handy for quickly finding fresh posts.

I’m sure the search problem will be solved somehow. Like all the content is on each instance so its just a case of it being accessible and indexed by google I guess?

People having to work harder is good? No I disagree with that entirely.

Part of what makes reddit so amazing is the amount of amazing knowledge and answers you can find from google.

Comparing the two communities, reddit nearly always has way more quality content and news for me though for the time being. Often even with big news it’s just not here on Lemmy at all. Many posts also have 0 comments and you just wouldn’t see that on Reddit. Once Sync can create posts I will probably start x-posting more from reddit to lemmy for communities I am most interested in.

For now I think I will start browsing Lemmy and then visit Reddit for anything I missed. Keeping my posting and commenting over here mostly because I’d like to see this place grow.

There is an option in settings at least for me, ‘show read posts’ if you uncheck that they will disappear. It’s not an easy access toggle though unfortunately.

Can’t tell if you are being serious or pulling my leg with that but I love it haha. I mean it’s a perfect way to distinguish because over here we have no good way to call the spiders other than ‘one of those long leg small body kinda spiders’ which is a terrible name.

I mean fair I guess we’re on the same page there then. But if it caters to a different clientele then the existing clientele will move elsewhere was really what I was getting at, and that may possibly be here.

I mean Facebook is actually a perfect example though no? I don’t know anyone below 40 who uses it. Eventually people get fed up of these stupid websites and move elsewhere.

Reddit will be around just like Facebook sure, but somewhere else will pick up the slack.

In Facebooks case that was Instagram largely which you know, also they owned. In Reddits case it may be Lemmy it may be elsewhere, we will see.

In the UK what we call a daddy longlegs has wings and flies (a crane fly I think). Obviously a very widely used name for things with a small body and a bunch of long legs haha

I think those issues will be solved though. Apps will increasingly make onboarding simpler so Lemmy will be as simple to use as Reddit.

At that point really its just a case of waiting for Reddit to fuck itself, which it absolutely will do eventually via corporate greed, and there we go, all the Lemmy content anyone could ever need.

I think the general consensus seems to be bot and/or spam accounts being removed but I haven’t seen evidence of it. Anecdotally I have seen many people say it feels more busy around Lemmy lately but I haven’t been here long enough to know myself. It is a curious one though.

If it is genuine then I suppose it could be a typical cycle for platforms that get raided by another, in this case an exodus from reddit to Lemmy - then after the dust settles some people decide they don’t like it after all and go back or elsewhere.

I don’t think that is a bad sign though that is a natural cycle and as long as some people remain then it shows overall growth.

Ahhh, ok that makes far more sense actually then. Text alone isn’t too bad especially if there are some optimisations available along the way.

Especially since, and correct me if I am wrong, but every instance holds all of the data for all of the other instances too? (that they are federated with).

This means there is an insane amount of redundancy no? With hundreds or thousands of servers the cost would eventually become prohibitive and need to rely on only a select few large servers and thus Lemmy doesn’t ‘solve’ the issue it tries to in that sense.

Or, maybe it’s only the bandwidth that becomes an issue and the data storage is actually minimal. If that’s the case I can see more how a smaller server could afford to be part of the ecosystem. Perhaps also down the line if not already there could be a cut off point for historical data to avoid bloat.

Global warming will fuck us indirectly before the weather on a Sunday afternoon is actually the problem, many seem to miss that.

Yeah I mean looking at the stats of new users, that watering down has already happened to the point where any extremeist shit is statistically insignificant by now. 99%+ of people here are just looking for a replacement reddit and that’s all, rather than some censorship haven where they can chat their extreme views.

I agree somewhat, I think Lemmy has a way to go though because there are some real big headlines that seem to be missing from Lemmy on certain communities, and often a lot of posts with 0 comments or very few. I know it’s early days but until Lemmy is a reliable source of news for my various hobbies I’ll still be using Reddit alongside. At least on Reddit for all it’s flaws, if there is something big happening in a certain scene, it’ll be there. It’s a one stop shop for all my information.

That’s ok though, because that’s how Reddit started too. They didn’t add subreddits from the start. So as long as it is providing an /all experience then I don’t see why it shouldn’t grow from there.

The type of switch used would be differently considered and marketed for a gaming keyboard too. Doesn’t really make a ton of difference if you can customise it though but generally speaking there are switches that lean more into gaming than general use.

For me personally it still needs to be far bigger though. On Reddit literally every bite of news was posted and discussed for many of the hobbies I have, large or niche. Yet on Lemmy some of my interests are barely represented nevermind being a reliable source of information and news.
