  • Might be worth remembering here that Lemmy instances, including .world are hosted by regular people. Not massive multinational companies worth billions who can engage the best legal talent around.

If Hollywood comes after a Lemmy instance, Holywood have a huge legal team and endless money. The Lemmy instance has some guy. They could quite literally destroy a persons life. With that in mind, I don’t blame any instance owners for erring on the side of taking a stance that won’t put them in the legal firing line.

  • You really just aren’t interested in boxing with anything but your own shadow, huh?

By quoting exactly what you said and exactly what I said I’m shadow boxing? OK.

You’ve got all these assertions and things I’ve tasked you with doing, yet I never did and clearly indicated so in my previous post.

So you didn’t ask me to justify OP’s post? And you didn’t expect a response from me when you talked about FOSS purists lecturing Sync users? If not, why on Earth did you even mention it?

If you can just make it look like I said that stuff. Right?

The trouble is, you did say that stuff. I’ve quoted you (and myself) directly. Now, if I’ve misunderstood either your words or the intent of your words, feel free to explain to me exactly where I’ve gone wrong and if I am wrong, I’ll gladly and happily apologise.

I’ve also directly answered your request about the usage of the word ‘infantile’ but I see you’ve chosen to not see that. I can understand that.

  • Let me make a list of things that would be “stupid” to take from this.

That you are answerable for what others have said.

Then why did you ask me to justify OP’s post?

That you are among those that were prodding Sync users.

Then why did you try and make me answerable for what other people were saying?

Not whatever the fuck direction that was that you just tried to take it in.

    It’s pretty simple. You said:

“because of the sync mention by the OP, there is a preponderance of lecturing coming from the FOSS purist community. It is infantile to expect no response to that”

And clearly expected me to have some sort of ownership of, or participation in, that lecturing. I then pointed out to you that I didn’t believe I had either but if you could find an example of me doing so I’d be happy to talk about it.

Feel free to tell me why my paraphrasing was inaccurate

Because it’s not what I said. I said:

“You’re absolutely correct. Anyone can enjoy any app they like and either pay for it or not…But coming into a thread about ways to ensure Lemmy gets the support it needs to develop and instances get the support they need to keep going to tell everyone how much you love your app is infantile.”

I’m not sure saying someone(s) coming into a thread which is nothing to do with Sync as a piece of software and proceeding to hijack it to be about Sync is infantile behaviour is directly equivalent to ‘standing up for yourself is infantile’. They weren’t standing up for themselves, they’d made an error in understanding what the thread was about and when informed what it was about got annoyed and asked why they ‘couldn’t just use what we want’ or ‘why do you care?’ when as far as I can tell nobody (certainly not me) told them they couldn’t use whatever app they wanted to, its simply not what this thread was about.

  • Here’s what OP said:

“With all this talk about Sync pricing…I think now is a great time to remind everyone, like sync’s developer, Lemmy’s developers need to be paid too! The amount of time all the devs put into making lemmy exist, in my opinion, should be worth some of your money. If you can afford it, donating to the people who develop lemmy and/or the people keeping your home instance up will accelerate the incredible growth of lemmy!”

How on Earth do you come to the conclusion that that is in any way calling Sync users out?

  • ‘policed’ - lol :)

I genuinely don’t give a shit about what app anybody uses. I’m not anti or pro any particular app. Feel free to go through my comment history and you’ll see mention of Sync in this and only this thread. Why?

Because a) I don’t give a shit what app people use and b) this isn’t a thread about Sync. The fact that the word ‘Sync’ appears in the title and body is used in an illustrative way to highlight the fact that Lemmy as a piece of software was developed by two guys who were given a grant. It needs funding via donations. Instance owners also need funding via donations. If these two things don’t happen Lemmy goes away. That’s the point of this thread, irregardless of what language or words were used. I’m not OP so I can’t say why they chose to use Sync as an example.

When Sync users jump in to tell everyone how much they love Sync, that detracts from the point of the thread. It dillutes it and all of a sudden everyone’s talking about Sync, not what the thread subject is about. OP and a couple others tried to go through this thread telling Sync posters that that wasn’t the point of thread. Then Sync posters got annoyed and we started getting the ‘I just want to use Sync’, ‘why do you care?’ comments. So we responded to those too.

Mods are only going to step in if a thread gets nasty, which it hasn’t. It’s just very very frustrating to see a thread hijacked by people who want to talk about how great an app is in a thread designed to draw attention to the fact that Lemmy as a piece of software and instance owners - both of which any app absolutely requires in order to function - need support.

If you or anyone else wants to talk about Sync in a positive or negative way then I’m sure there are communities you can do that in. There’s absolutely no need to enshittify a thread that has absolutely no bearing on Sync (or any other app) as a piece of software, especially when that thread discusses a subject as absolutely vital to the continued existence, growth and maturation of Lemmy as this.
