This guy’s channel is so awesome, glad to see it posted here. He has all kinds of cool tools that he built in his lab like a scanning electron microscope. His videos on atomic force microscopes and laser lithography are really fascinating as well, he is really great at explaining the concepts too, definitely recommend!
+1 for Raindrop, that app is amazing, I keep watching for a self-hosted version/alternative that is as good and they are getting closer. The killer feature for me is being able to highlight stuff and then when you visit the site again you see what you have highlighted (in addition to saving them elsewhere). I also pay for premium because it’s great, I don’t use a ton of the pro features either.
So if I understand this right you will need to change the network on the port attached to the synology in your UniFi configuration or set the vlan tag in the synology OS, I would do the former. It sounds like you just added a second network/vlan to the existing interface which means you actually created a trunk and are getting the old network untagged and the new network with vlan tags which the synology is dropping. Synology OS also doesn’t really support trunked ports through the UI (even though it does support a port that only uses a vlan tag) so it’s much easier to just leave them untagged.

That is what I’m saying, that SDK covers more than just normal users.
I mean sure but that’s a lot of words to say “I didn’t read the directions and no one caught it in a merge request review because no one else read the directions either.”
Their documentation and examples are pretty easy to read and the site parameter is explained in the getting started guide and even linked from the readme for the JavaScript sdk, and in lots of sample configurations so I’m not sure how this made it into a release and then no one noticed the missing metrics for eleven days, sounds like lots of issues in that shop.
The behavior of the sdk isn’t great but the proposed solution wouldn’t work because you can use custom endpoints for all of the components using endpoints on domains you own anyway.
Alright I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask either but if I were to guess it is s01e6 that they are referring to, I had forgotten about that show! It is really a great show from what I remember, especially that episode. Definitely worth a watch if you have not, I should watch it again.

I have been thinking more about this idea and I love it even more, I feel like domain specific search engines are going to be more and more important in the future as the results of the major search engines get even worse and worse.

This is a cool idea! I did notice that on mobile the search results are wider than the viewport and if I had a feature request it would be to make them way, way more compact but that might just be me hah.
You should also check out the Lenses feature that Kagi has, I think every search engine needs that feature now hah. I bookmarked your site for the next time I am searching for sure though!
I think what this person is saying is that systems and services have been monitored for metrics and logs for a long time, I know I have been doing it for more than 20 years across many OS, hardware platform, and software stack. The tools and depth of the integrations have definitely changed and gotten way better and more sophisticated but I definitely made systems that monitored and healed themselves to varying levels of efficiency since at least using Nagios in 2003 (I’m getting Perl PTSD flashbacks now hah).
One thing that has definitely gotten better in the last 5 or so years though is code level instrumentation and tracing as well as the higher level correlation tools. I have also seen more developers and vendors way more willing to implement monitoring features in their code from the beginning leading to more data and less duct tape and guessing which has been FANTASTIC.
Anyway, great post though, the monitoring arena is definitely way more awesome than ever before these days that is for sure.

As the other person said, NUCs and such are able to do transcodes via Intel QuickSync hardware acceleration, it’s not really possible to transcode 4k in realtime on most CPUs without it.
You will need at least an 8th gen Intel processor to do HVEC which is what h265 uses, more info is in this chart on Wikipedia about which generations support which things. Anecdotally, this has worked extremely well for me for a long time, definitely worth it.
Also be aware if you are doing any virtualization you will need to pass the iGPU through to the guest machine.
You are right, more specifically in case anyone is curious it usually has to be whomever owns the public IP addresses because that is who would own the reverse zone for that IP block according to the internet root dns servers in most circumstances. In OPs case you are probably right, this is probably the VPS provider but not always.

Cloudflare does post their IP ranges so I would probably start with looking at traffic involved with those IPs to see what kind of information was going there, you could also block those ranges and see what breaks.
Yeah this smells like a bug in Caddy or something. I agree to try nginx or something else to see if it’s Caddy or if it’s something with the configuration of the host. The only thing I could think of is if caddy isn’t caching DNS responses and maybe is getting rate limited so it appears slower while it’s waiting on the DNS request but I am shooting in the dark as I haven’t spent much time with caddy.
Yep you are correct, that’s what I was trying to when I was talking about the logs on the public instance and forwarding them to a central place of that is important information, sorry if it didn’t make sense, I must have been tired haha.
I forgot before, it is also possible use ProxyProtocol for TCP applications but the application will need to understand it for it to show in the application logs. It would also be possible to use this to allow the on-prem instance (nginx->nginx let’s say) to see the true client IP from the public instance, the exact configuration is implementation dependent though.
Yep that was exactly my thought process haha. For what it’s worth, raspian is pretty good and Ubuntu 22.04 works great on the PI4, I have 4 or 5 around here and they have been awesome.
Now I am curious though, what are you going to use for the key store? That is one of the things on my list to set up pretty soon here as well and I was going to put it on a pi myself. Also, if you haven’t seen this thing or this thing? They are pretty neat and I was going to get one just for the novelty haha.
