I grew up in the cold war. I’ve done the drills. I know both what the fear of an all-out nuclear holocaust is, and I know that the reality will be something entirely different.

Did you not see what happened to Russia’s latest Satan II ICBM? Thankfully that one wasn’t armed.

Realistically, if Putin uses the nuclear codes, this is what happens:

A few warheads in Russia explode in their silos and the government blames the West. A bunch of other warheads are harmlessly shot down. A few actually find their targets and a few million people are wiped out. The west retaliates and suddenly the war is over.

BICS then becomes ascendant in global power, China claims Taiwan and the Philippines and possibly Japan, and Israel is wiped off the face of the earth as all sides turn it into a nuclear slag pile, killing Israelis, Palestinians and a large number of Lebanese and Syrians in the bargain.

Then things adjust to the new normal and economies rebuild, with the noted absence of Russia and Belarus.

Spot-on.

I spend a lot of time training people how to properly review code, and the only real way to get good at it is by writing and reviewing a lot of code.

With an LLM, it trains on a lot of code, but it does no review per-se… unlike other ML systems, there’s no negative and positive feedback systems in place to improve quality.

Unfortunately, AI is now equated with LLM and diffusion models instead of machine learning in general.

So… the winning strategy is to overestimate them?

GPTs are designed with translation in mind, so I could see it being extremely useful in providing me instruction on a topic in a non-English native language.

But they haven’t been around long enough for the novelty factor to wear off.

It’s like computers in the 1980s… people played Oregon Trail on them, but they didn’t really help much with general education.

Fast forward to today, and computers are the core of many facets of education, allowing students to learn knowledge and skills that they’d otherwise have no access to.

GPTs will eventually go the same way.

I get 4 weeks, plus sick days, plus parental leave, various types of training days and charitable days, plus a 2 week carry-over and I’m neither American nor European.

The part where the headline is supposedly about the first time humans have experienced it?

The content is fine… the formatting and headline are atrocious.

Fuel? I’d go with “implement step one of” myself.

The headline here has no mention of wet bulb?

The article is about the first formalized test measuring the relationship between heat and humidity on thermal management in the body, mostly using a single fit thirty year old male. It’s not about how the first human subjected to wet bulb conditions handled them, but about an improved understanding of the relationship of heat and humidity on thermal management of humans.

So… only slightly related to the headline?

Headline was obviously false from the start, but it turns out it was just clickbait?

I think they just left out “…in the lab.”

The research is great, the article is horrible in many ways; it was obviously written by someone who didn’t understand what they were writing about.

Even leading with a high power laser array image when the article is about heating plastic with a low power non-visible radiation….

That last bit is correct. The privacy commissioners are under-resourced and a large number of businesses are not actually compliant with the GDPR. Only a few highly visible infractions get addressed, and even with those the final result is not fixing the infractions and paying the fine; usually a small payment is made along with an agreement that the party will behave better in the future.

Yeah; just set your article to 2x speed :D

I kid; all this video is going to vanish one day, and the text will remain.

And for most things, text is a highly superior format. Sometimes you need a few images or a video clip to supplement it, but I like to ingest information while my ears are otherwise occupied. I keep my phone and computer muted most of the time. I often watch videos with closed captioning enabled on 2x just to scrub through and find the 10 seconds of actual information in the 15 minute video.

Isn’t there just a video we could watch?

Remember when China dropped the price on their rare earth exports by roughly 70% which effectively shut down all other rare earth operations globally, and also started an era of cheap solar panels and electronics? I’d say that was pretty hard to ignore.
