I didn’t say “defederate them”; I said that I didn’t know why other instances were defederated when that instance is worse. I intentionally didn’t say defederation is bad or good because that’s irrelevant.
Also, different people have different views on defederation and its relation to the Fediverse. In my experience, curating away from content harmful to your users is important to creating healthy communities.
This guy has been spamming garbage everywhere. sh.itjust.works is a terrible instance with no moderation and this quality of post is pretty normal from users there. I don’t know why they haven’t been defederated en masse when other less spammy/disruptive instances that actually contribute to discussions have been.
I think that would be useful! I also think that anyone putting that much work in should look into hosting their own server, because they’ve already done the hardest part of hosting a server in the fediverse. A big part of the issue is that a lot of ActivityPub apps don’t really have granular enough customization baked in to support that sort of thing just yet; you can get some apps that do that on the user side, but anything on the server/community side is usually just “block all” or nothing. The admin of my Mastodon instance is always complaining that he can’t just hide certain instances from the “all” tab without blocking then entirely, and he just wants to hide them so they don’t overwhelm the server, not block them from showing up for people who choose to interact with them.
Honestly, I’ve seen the Fediblock thing on Mastodon, and it’s…pretty terrible. A whole lot of minority groups get targeted disproportionately by that stuff, especially by misinformation about their instances. The answer is really to leave instances if you disagree with moderation policies and the admins won’t listen, and to join instances that are philosophically aligned with you, because unlike in a centralized/capitalist model, this actually works at cultivating a community that you can engage with in a healthy manner. If not, and you go with something like Fediblock/the one big blocklist site, you’re just gonna end up with most instances that serve 2SLGBTQIA+ people getting blocked or having more harmful misinformation spread about them. Hell, if a lot of Lemmy had its way, anything but being capitalist and pro-USA would be banned.
But also, a lot of clients can subscribe to feeds already. ActivityPub is pretty great at cross compatibility with Mastodon and the like. You just subscribe to someone who uses a microblogging platform based on ActivityPub and it’ll show up in your feed.
No, because if every piece of your entire existence isn’t dedicated to making profit for the upper class, your life is worthless, and anything that devalues the profit they could make from you is stealing.
To be clear, I’m not saying you’re wrong, just expressing frustration at the current state of the world.
It’s the cost of federation with instances that try to be giant general-purpose instances (.world and .ee, mostly): just constant shitty takes that overwhelm participants in the conversation. Federation works far better with lots of small purpose-driven instances instead of gigantic ones; my small (<1000 users) specific community-focused Mastodon instance sees absolutely nothing like this and is full of people who intentionally engage in good-faith conversation with the rest of the community while every large instance I’ve seen has the same issues as centralized social media in that regard.
Is there another alternative? Bandcamp is the only similar website that a lot of artists I enjoy use.
Almost none of these groups actually care about the kids. Most of them actively support policies that are proven to enable/cause more abuse because it feels like they’re hurting the bad guys. As a childhood survivor of a bunch of awful shit that I don’t want to get into specifics on, I’ve never seen a single “for the children” group advocate anything that wouldn’t have caused more trauma for me when I was younger. There’s no care about fixing problems and preventing childhood trauma/abuse, just care about asserting control and investing in what “feels good”: retributive justice (that’s more likely to cause recidivism) against one single specific style of abuser while ignoring others (and the survivors) entirely.
This is more about feeling good (and, for some, more authoritarian control) than about actually helping the issue of child abuse.
Someone has to subscribe to a community from an instance for it to become initially federated with lemmy.one (or vice versa). If it’s a small instance, that might not have happened yet. Additionally, some instances take a while to federate comments/posts, so it can just be that natural lag. This might not be 100% accurate but I think the basics are right.
If you’re watching movies with friends and want a FOSS alternative, Jellyfin is the way to go. It’s basically a way to host a media streaming center that others can connect to. It might be a bit overkill depending on your needs, but it’s great for that exact purpose. It doesn’t have chat or anything, though, so you’ll want to keep something else around for that.

It’s probably related to the fact that this instance didn’t update to the latest software yet (unless I missed it) but I’m not certain of that so don’t take my word as gospel.
Thank you! I’ll probably repurpose an old PC to reduce costs when I do because I have a little bit of hand me down stuff, but it’s not enough to really run a server that hosts anything important on so I’ll probably have to supplement (and yeah, the storage thing).
Thanks! The awesome communities around a lot of this stuff really helped me get into these things too. I got lucky enough to get a decent soldering station recently too (gift from family) so hopefully I also start to make a bit of progress. Honestly, having things break that I know logically have to be simple to fix was what got me most interested; why should we throw a set of speakers or a kitchen appliance into a landfill just because there’s damage to a single wire? And it really hasn’t been too intimidating so far.
And this whole shift to the fediverse has made me super interested in running my own server locally, both for storage purposes (I need too much storage space >.>) and for the sake of having the ability to host whatever I want locally - but I haven’t really played around with that yet since it costs a decent bit of money even buying used server stuff from China.
I’ve been getting really into DIY stuff lately, mostly electronics. As someone with a lot of sensory issues, mechanical keyboards are fantastic since you can tune them so much to your own preferences, and as a retro tech freak (and staunch believer in repair rather than replace), learning the basics of soldering and general electronics modding has been great (and custom Gameboy stuff is right up my alley). I’m even thinking about learning PCB design stuff and some general low level computing stuff I didn’t learn before. Unfortunately, I haven’t really been able to afford much in this regard lately since I’m disabled and I have been having nerve/joint issues lately, but friends did help me get parts for a slightly more ergonomic keyboard (Alice layout instead of standard) so I can use the computer more comfortably (and I guess I’ll have to make getting a nice split keyboard a long term goal), and I’m planning on doing some visual stuff to make it look nice and distinctly mine (it’s layered acrylic, so adding pressed flowers and stuff below the top layer).
I just wanted to say thanks for putting this into words better than I could. I’d been thinking about this recently and this really helped make a few things click. I’ve been pretty frustrated with the idea of strict canon especially in anime communities, as well as what a bunch of different copyright holders of stuff like Star Wars have done to their media lately in the pursuit of profit. I’m pretty anti-copyright in general and I think this is a good way of explaining part of why I have that stance.
Users on other instances can create communities! Those options differ from instance to instance. And admins do seem to sometimes approve communities here. Also, this isn’t the exact same as the other site; there’s a reason that the default homepage option is all communities that are local to your instance. You only really need a community if you really need a separate section for that discussion.
I’ve been lurking a bit and I honestly feel the same way. I’m kinda kicking myself for not jumping into fediverse stuff earlier. Only downside is that certain niche communities don’t yet exist but I’m sure they will soon with the influx of people.
Honestly, your instance has gotten worse over time in that regard too. Lemmy.ml used to be one of the better instances in that regard but the influx of Reddit users caused quality to crater and weird propaganda-ish pro-America/pro-capitalism stuff (and, not coincidentally, more racist/transphobic stuff) to start flowing from .ml. Probably not anything worthy of any block/defederation because ml still has decent content and a lot of good users but I sometimes am surprised by the stuff that comes out of there.
