My headcanon is that after world war 3 we lost track of time (for a while; survival was priority) and a lot of records were destroyed / reconstructed, so the dates become fuzzy after world war 3, and by the time of TNG and DS9 those fuzzy dates had become accepted as fact because they didn’t know any better. The eugenics wars haven’t happened on the canon dates, but whose to say they don’t actually happen 10 or 20 years from now? 😛

Real life example, our date system involves numbering based on the birth of somebody that almost certainly didn’t exist. It’s just widely accepted that Christ was born 2024 years ago. Or would it be 2025 years ago? I’m too tired to figure that out.

  • Ah, TFWs. If you go by the news, neither big farms nor Tim Horton’s can survive without them. I’m glad you’re treated well. It pains me to think about how much exploitation is in the industry.

It’s a dream of mine (and a handful of friends) to start a commune / cooperative farming thing (closer to the hobby side of things) east of Toronto once we pool enough money, so insights into the industry are fascinating to me. And yeah, we know it’s going to be more work and recurring failures than we can possibly imagine (especially to start) but we’re determined and going to be diligent in research and preparation before we jump into it.

  • That thread is fucking bizarro, and is itself unhinged.

The CEO seemed fairly reasonable to me (if someone were bashing my company on their blog I’d like a chance for rebuttal), though they did ignore the “please stop emailing me” request.

It almost feels like everyone involved from the blog post to the thread comments are in the middle of a manic episode. What in the heck is going on?

If anything I bet this results in a net subscriber gain for Kagi.

  • I don’t believe that’s possible. I think at one point there was a way to disable all access to the history API, but I don’t believe that option exists anymore. Additionally, it would break a lot of websites.

Unfortunately I think this is probably a result of the way YouTube implements their “auto play next video” feature, and they are unlikely to change that.

An option might be using an alternative YouTube front-end, rather than using the YouTube site, but I don’t have a lot of experience with those. (other people on here do though)

  • No. The API is correctly named, but I can see how it could be misleading (and concerning!)

That API allows websites to programmatically go somewhere in your history. It can go forward, back, or to a specific point in your history, but it can’t see what that history is, it can only go back 3 pages back or forward 2 pages for example. It doesn’t actually know the history, it just navigates to those points in history. So Google isn’t going to know that you were on Pornhub 3 pages ago, for example.

But isn’t that at random? He’s a tailor at this point in the show, not an intelligence officer assassinating targets for his job. Doesn’t “I have a list of enemies and I might kill one of them” sound slightly psychopathic? Garak does come close to being revenge-driven when he reconnects with Tain and rejoins the Obsidian Order, stating he has people he wants to take care of (such as Dukat), but I don’t believe he outright says he’s going to kill them, it’s something much more subtle and discrete.

I have to respectfully disagree (also I bloody love that we are debating the psychological nuances of a fictional character from a show that ended, what… 25-ish years ago?)

I can’t recall, off the top of my head, Garak ever telling a joke per se. He got his enjoyment out of subterfuge and misdirection - did he kill that ambassador or was he just a gardener, which was extra intriguing because earlier in the show you didn’t really know what his previous line of work was, you just had suspicions. But if he did then it was in the past and it was an assassination in line with his job. He can get off on hinting about that kind of thing, and his colleagues can go along with it, because it was in the past and it was a professional hit, so the people around him don’t have to worry about him doing the same to them. It’s like listening to vets tell war stories, even if they killed a whole lot of people you know it was for their job and a good cause. They can even joke about it, because it’s in the past.

But in this joke it’s implying that he’s just going to kill somebody at random, because he hasn’t decide who that person is going to be. He isn’t in the Obsidian Order at this point, so he’s not assassinating to protect Cardassia. In Pale Moonlight he assassinates, openly even, but it’s for a good cause and it is indirectly sanctioned by Sisko. His style of humour was basically masterful (and kind of dark) trolling, not blunt “har har I’m going to kill someone” jokes. I guess you could infer that he might be killing someone in a professional context, and maybe there are multiple targets so he hasn’t decided which target to kill yet, but obviously it’s a short form meme so there isn’t room that kind of context. As is, it feels like a poor caricature of who the character really was.

That said, the joke is still funny and I have no idea why I’ve typed this much about a fucking meme instead of working 😂

While I could hear “I haven’t decided yet” in Garak’s voice, and this is very funny, I don’t think it fits with in-universe Garak. He’s not a psychopath killing people at random — he had specific reasons to kill the people he did, and generally with surgical precision. I can’t see him planning to just kill someone for no particular reason.

(sorry for being that guy and criticising a joke)

    (I still upvoted!)

  • I’m still on IRC! There’s a raw simplicity to it that I appreciate. You don’t have to use a bloated Electron app to connect to a proprietary service, you can just go straight text on the protocol-level in terminal (if you’re nuts), and the protocol is open and simple enough to understand that you can easily make your own client even if you’re a lazy or mediocre dev.

So IRC, Lemmy, and I guess Instagram (if that counts)
