The only thing I find intimidating is following stuff from other instances. Even the word “instances” is going to send casual users scurrying. A feature of each instance should be the ability to search other instances seamlessly. Or, a centralized search function that instances can opt into would be awesome. One that can work from an app, so you never even have to worry about which instance you’re browsing.
I said when this started that it wasn’t actually costing them.
