  • A lot factory farming is absolutely cruel yes, but production of plenty of animal based products doesn’t necessarily have to be. I’ve raised chickens before, eggs generally tasted better and the chickens were treated like pets (they weren’t meant for their meat). It’s a spectrum, the goal as a vegetarian is to reduce harm.

  • I’ve had arch “break” on me about 4-5 times. Most of the time it is issues regarding Nvidia drivers being updated (usually just chroot and reinstall/reconfigure drivers fixes it), but the others were mostly my fault (I’m often pretty lazy about making sure my system is up to date, and expect some breakage if I update only about every couple of months on a pretty customized system without looking to make sure nothing will cause an issue).

  • Tlp and Intel xtu for undervolting (lowers temps and power consumption, but newer cpus don’t support it) are pretty good ideas. If battery life is your perogative, try avoiding discrete gpus, they can be a pain to make sure they don’t drain battery in Linux. 14hrs is possible, but you have to spec properly (think thinkpad t480 with dual batteries, and a low power display).

  • Community college is a great place to start, allows you to get your toes wet without too high stakes. Speaking as a software engineer, don’t worry to much about the adhd stuff, there are a lot of us in the tech field (being able multi-task well and hyperfocus on something we are somewhat interested in are actually pretty valuable in his field). I’d probably advocate for making sure you adhere to a strict schedule for a bit when first starting out, makes it easier to not burnout on school long term (it’s hard I know, but once you establish those little habits school stays more managable).
