Shirley Jackson is fantastic! I read a book of her stories last year and they were all weird and unsettling, with a lot of characters that violate social norms in the most unusual ways. Creeped me out but not in a “boo!” scary kind of way. In the horror vs. terror discussion, she is a master of terror!
