Mine is Summer Wars. It’s about a social media virtual world being taken over by an evil AI, and the only people who can save the world is the most eccentric family ever created.
I haven’t seen too many anime movies yet! Right now my tentative favorite, with how little I’ve seen, is Wolf Children. It’s very sweet and sentimental, and there are some beautifully set stills in it.
I’m not super big on anime movies, but mine would be End of Evagelion, considering I’ve rewatched it before.
Girls und panzer Der film is perfect. A great blend of over-the-top action and lovable characters. Also tanks are cool.
No game no life zero
Although the anime for no game no life was good, the movie feels like basically a different genre. It takes place before the anime, telling the history of how the world became the way it is.
Instead of taking things completely out of proportion like in the main story, their lives are on the line, being the weakest race, and it’s them fighting to keep everyone alive.
Overall, the music was great, the story was great, and the animations were absolutely amazing.
5 centimeters per second.
I fucking hate and love it.
For me, it’s Mamoru Oshii’s masterpiece Tenshi no Tamago (1985). Gorgeous animation and a very atmospheric story with barely any dialogue, will leave you scratching your head.
For something more modern and accessible, I loved Eiga Daisuki Pompo-san / Pompo the Cinephile (2021), a love letter to cinema (specifically Hollywood-style cinema, from a japanese perspective); another great one from recent years is The Tale of the Princess Kaguya / Kaguya-hime no Monogatari (2013), but maybe choosing a Ghibli film is cheating?
end of evangelion
I haven’t watched that many anime movies but from those that I’ve watched my favourite is Pokémon: Giratina and the Sky Warrior. Nostalgia probably played a huge part here but I still enjoy things like Shaymin’s personality change when it shifts forms, the alternate dimension, and the antagonist’s flying ships. I also really like Pokémon Platinum.
