Apparently Reddit has now banned a subreddit dedicated to the Fediverse Reddit-alternative Kbin:

If you're on a centralised platform like Reddit, this is what they can do. Centralised platforms have all-powerful leaders who can do whatever they want, and you have no alternatives if you disagree.
The point of the Fediverse being on lots of servers is that each server's power is limited. If you disagree with one server's actions, you can move.

I’m getting 8-10 year old accounts that haven’t commented for months jumping on any post I make where I mention Lemmy. So far, Lemmy is apparently a place for “CCP apologists” and “tankies”.
I’ve yet to run into any of these individuals. Sounds like some people at Reddit are not so happy.
I mean I like the lemmy-verse, but the main devs behind Lemmy are totally tankies. It’s the reason why a lot of hesitant in joining
This is the main developer (one of the only developers) - if the avatar wasn’t enough, have a look at the “essays” repo in his account…

Just seems kind of silly to avoid a whole platform over the personal ideology of the creator. No one seems to have any problem with some of the extreme anti-human ideologies that a lot of social media ceos have.
The devs run lemmy.ml and lemmygrad.ml. The admins on both remove anything which is negative about china in any way, even if completely truthful like the genocide they are commiting against the uygurs and about the imminent succession crisis, for “orientalism,” something not even listed as a rule, and yet openly criticise the US government. They allow content approving of the uygur genocide. A person coming in to join-lemmy will see lemmy.ml as their first instance. Some of the other major instances have defederated against both if not only lemmygrad.
When I joined I checked out the mod log and saw a few mentions of “orientalism” as a reason for removing comments which I thought was weird.
It sounds like a huge waste of time removing mention of an ongoing human rights crisis. I guess it means a lot to them to have a little safe space on the internet where they aren’t reminded about painful things.
That is simply not true. First, there is no such “genocide”, and when it comes up, it’s generally supported by sources that confirm just that (by a variety of sources that might even on the face disagree with each other on other issues). On the other hand, when I see people claim there is a genocide, I’ve yet to see something that isn’t directly tied back to Western propaganda. Additionally, I don’t see removal of content that’s critical unless it’s markedly false (whether intentionally lying, or just unintentionally spouting propaganda they think is true). There is no specific privilege given to China.
Edit: Aaaand I’ve now noticed this user was banned and their comments removed. Well, I hope others can enjoy the sleuthing I did above regarding the human rights abuses being committed against the Uyghurs in China.
It’s literally one section of a very wide website/community. It’s like looking at /r/conservative and then thinking all of Reddit is a right wing cesspool
Yeah, I got a bad taste of crazy tankie stuff on my first venture into Lemmy when I decided to check it out. Luckily I’ve not seen much extremist rhetoric once I joined. I do see where it’s scaring off a lot of people from reddit, that said, I’ve seen lots of people promoting non-communist instances specifically, as well as the idea of federating/defederating as an antidote.
If you recall, reddit used to have that as well. There was a time (5+ years ago I think?) when communities dedicated to teen porn and upskirts and legit hate groups were regularly on /r/all before they all got banned. It comes with the public forums/community aspect. In a big diverse forum where there are communities you like and connect with there are bound to be those tou don’t like…and then some you really don’t like.

Huh. I’ve never seen this type viewpoint. You’re aware there are multiple witnesses and videos out there? This isn’t even up for debate.
…you wrote, only half an hour earlier 😉
Lmao I feel like I’m being trolled somewhere.
Witnesses and videos of what?
It is in fact up for debate, or at least it should be. Your adamant refusal, and assertion that it isn’t up for debate, doesn’t make it so.
Here’s a statement from The World Bank from 2019 making clear that the allegations are not true: https://www.worldbank.org/en/news/statement/2019/11/11/world-bank-statement-on-review-of-project-in-xinjiang-china
And here’s one from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (what religion is predominant amongst Uyghurs?): https://www.oic-oci.org/docdown/?docID=4447&refID=1250
Edit to add: And if a United Nations statement is more appealing to you, try this: https://documents-dds-ny.un.org/doc/UNDOC/GEN/G19/240/77/PDF/G1924077.pdf?OpenElement
Are the China Cables documents not valid? https://www.icij.org/investigations/china-cables/read-the-china-cables-documents/
AP News reports that “The documents were given to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists by an anonymous source. The ICIJ verified them by examining state media reports and public notices from the time, consulting experts, cross-checking signatures and confirming the contents with former camp employees and detainees.” https://apnews.com/article/china-cables-ap-top-news-international-news-china-race-and-ethnicity-4ab0b341a4ec4e648423f2ec47ea5c47
Your link to a UN document seems to be broken, but this report from the UN cites “Serious human rights violations have been committed in XUAR in the context of the Government’s application of counter-terrorism and counter-“extremism” strategies.” https://www.ohchr.org/en/documents/country-reports/ohchr-assessment-human-rights-concerns-xinjiang-uyghur-autonomous-region

Thank you, your work is appreciated.
Yeah I first joined lemmy.ml but learned about how they do this so I switched here. I think the community is better here anyways
look at any thread over there about the Russia-Ukraine war…it’ll turn a lot of people off for sure
Exactly because we made the mistake once, in more naive times, we don’t want to make it again…
That’s patently untrue
Yeah you’re right there unfortunately. The ideologue in me got to my fingers first 😀
No worries 😆
What specifically bothers you about his essays? Are you bothered purely by the topics, or by the actual content?
Good try, dessalines, but I ain’t biting 😉
they looked at lemmygrad

sadly, that’s more than some people do.
