Looks like there might be yet another mass-migration wave from Twitter to Mastodon on the way…
https://www.thefader.com/2023/09/18/elon-musk-pay-for-twitter
… Probably the bots that Elon likes will still be free.
Elon is the greatest advocate for Mastodon, and he’s even paying for the effort.
@ajsadauskas @technology “It’s the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots.”
He’s not very good at this, is he? It’s like he’s had amnesia about firing his entire Trust and Safety team…
be me who doesn’t use either
shrug
Twitter to Mastodon
Mastodon isn’t the only federated micro-blogging platform…
@Epsilon It’s not, but it’s the one many first-time Fediverse users coming across from Twitter end up on. (Much like how many users coming across from Reddit end up on Lemmy first.)
Then the jump from Mastodon to Calckey/Pleroma/Frienica/Pixelfed/etc in many cases comes later.
What’s the advantages of those systems?
but it’s the one many first-time Fediverse users coming across from Twitter end up on.
That’s because it’s the only one ppl will mention as an alternative. Stop telling ppl to try mastodon, tell them to try firefish or akkoma.
Also, the jump effect is way overstated. Some users do end up moving to other software, but many more just leave because they don’t like mastodon.
Mastodon is the only one people actually use though.
Threads?
Massive flop and I don’t think they are federated with the greater fediverse yet.
From what I can find, Threads has 10 million active users, and Mastodon only has 1.7 million. Threads may have been a “massive flop” in that they’re not doing as well as hoped and the userbase is declining, but it’s still far more popular than Mastodon, which also has a declining userbase outside of some recent spikes.
Threads isn’t even federated with the greater Fedi so IDK why it’s even being contented here. In the scope of people who actually use the fediverse Mastodon is king.
It is a more likely place for people from Twitter to migrate to.
@ajsadauskas @technology Good stuff. 🎉 Looking forward to welcoming them.
@ajsadauskas @technology Very big brain energy.
Cool. I never use either so…
@ajsadauskas @technology I dunno, seems like more of a thought bubble that will get retracted quickly if it ever gets deployed.
It does seem like it would be the death knell for twitter if it was though
@ajsadauskas @technology
I’m still on Twitter just to watch its demise but I won’t pay to do it.
