i love that Roddenberry just created this character for his wife, so she could have the perfect role for her amazing personality… so of course she’s an awesome character… i mean that’s REAL love baby…
She wasn’t his wife then, but ‘other woman number one.’ Sadly.
Nichelle Nichols was ‘other woman number two’ in the early days of production of TOS. Her reason for telling Martin Luther King she wanted to quit was because she didn’t want to be ‘the other woman to the other woman.’
Roddenberry was more than willing to change gender stereotypes, but let’s not romanticize his relationships.
I read that initial audiences thought she was mouthy and shouldnt try to act like a man… we’ve come a little ways
somebody’s talking shit, and you’re repeating it
Sure. That someone is William Shatner: (From Wikipedia) William Shatner corroborated this in Star Trek Memories, and added that female viewers at test screenings hated the character as well.[11] Shatner noted that female viewers felt she was “pushy” and “annoying” and also thought that “Number One shouldn’t be trying so hard to fit in with the men.”[12]
Y’know the retroactively craziest role that never gets mentioned here is that Majel Barret voiced Spock’s mother Amanda Grayson in TAS.
Just dropping that for the benefit of the people making the Chapel==Una==Computer jokes.
Wasn’t pretty much every character outside the main cast voiced by James Doohan, Majel Barrett, or Nichelle Nichols?
