I was looking into why I just don’t see cover bands at my local venue but this hits a bit deeper at the issue.

I wonder if how niche music tastes have become has something to do with it.

    I kinda feel that sentiment too, and although it may also just be me getting old, it’s certainly not from being under a rock. I agree that there’s a lot of music out there, and no matter what genre you like, there are tons of bands to check out and while a lot of them are quite decent, it seems that somehow very few of them rise above mediocrity. Often the bands have the right sound and tick the boxes of the genre, but the singer’s meh and uncharismatic or the songwriting is just bad. Finding a band that is truly worth investing the time in to discover their back catalog is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

    For example, right now I’m listening to “Superunknown” by Soundgarden which is such an iconic album of the 1990s that 30 years on I’m still rediscovering it every so often and finding new angles to it. I could immediately name dozens of similarly iconic albums from the 70s, 80s, 90s or early 2000s but somehow I’m finding it very hard to name any “Superunknowns” of the 2010s and 2020s.
