I’ve been using it for a while. I stopped.

My two issues were security concerns because Beeper needs to unencrypt my data from all platforms to re-encrypt it to send it to me, which sounds like a huge single point of failure; and regular connection issues where I had to switch back to the original app.

Great concept, but not quite there yet.

Not to mention Beeper claims to be open source, but it actually isn’t. That’s a HUGE red flag. This could have changed of course, and anyone’s free to prove me wrong, in fact I’d be glad if someone did. Because running a local Beeper instance over trusting them with your data is ALWAYS the best choice.

Why do you say it’s not open source? I’m using one of their bridges right now to send iMessage to my local matrix server.

Yeah, I’m confused why they’re saying that? Their Github is right here and you can setup your own instance with bridges just like you have.

What would you recommend instead? A lot of my people are on Signal, and it would be tough to get them off, but as of now, I really just need something that can deal with Signal and SMS.

Honestly, I’m just back to multiple apps. I work with people from all over, so I have like 7 different apps. Ah well.

I’m just using matrix through other cinny on web and schildichat on android. You will need to self host if you want to host the bridges yourself without any possibility of another server owner seeing the unencrypted chats, but matrix is definitely the way to “future proof” your chatting imo.
